Training of Local Mental Health Professionals
Thursday, November 3, 2011.
The GTC Mental Health Forum held its monthly meeting, which is a continuous mental health education initiative for Palestinian mental health professionals. Dr. John Soos, a Canadian Clinical psychologist, gave a lecture about “Staying Calm in Face of Provocation: Preliminary Thoughts on Anger Management for Adolescents.” Dr. Soos presented a new intervention program based on five sessions. He started working on this program along with other specialists to help Palestinian Children face provocations made by the occupation. A long discussion took place and exchanging ideas between the attendees and the lecturer will take part later.

November 9-12, 2011.
GTC repeated the four day trainingworkshop on “The Principles of Psychotherapy” under the training project in cooperation with the Weltfriedensdienst. The lectures were given by the psychiatrist Dr. Samah Jabr, director of mental health services in the GTC. Mental Health professionals from the West Bank and East Jerusalem attended this training course which included topics about: introduction to psychotherapy and its importance, the therapist’s characteristics, therapeutic interviewing, common mistakes in psychotherapy, and intervention methods with the children and adolescents, etc.

November 23-26, 2011.
GTC organized a four day training workshop on “Play Therapy” under the training project in cooperation with the Weltfriedensdienst. The training was provided by Dr. Amjad Abu Jedy, PhD in Psychological & EducationalCounseling, from Bana Center for Educational Consultation and Training, Amman, Jordan. The training was attended by 17 mental health professionals from different organizations working in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Dr. Abu Jedy discussed the concept and theories of play therapy, types & patterns of play therapy, playing room, principles of play therapy relationship.

The monthly Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Supervision Case Conference brought together clinicians who attended the previous CBT training sessions organized by GTC. Ms. Samah Hindi, a psychologist, presented a case about a man who has Phobia and OCD while Dr. Ivona Amleh supervised the group discussion.

Thursday, November 17, 2011.
On behalf of GTC, Ms. Rania Mukarker, Social Worker & Play therapy practitioner, participates in the monthly meeting “Groups of Psychological & Social Support” organized by YMCA, the meeting was held this month in Al-Ala’yeh School. The meetings usually discuss the crisis intervention under social and political violence, where as the team of this project is trained to give such kind of intervention and they discuss the mechanism of referring clients to participating centers. The project targets poor and marginalized areas to give counseling sessions to the children and their families.

Ms. Hunaida Iseed, Educational & Psychological Counselor in GTC, gave a lecture about “Adolescents” to 40 mothers from Saint Joseph School - Bethlehem. The lecture was for two hours, whereas the opportunity was open for questions and some practical work. GTC staff members will be giving a couple of lectures to the students’ mothers in the upcoming few months.

Groups:
Fridays & Saturdays, November 2011.
The ongoing classroom for elementary and secondary school children with learning disabilities took place during Fridays and Saturdays of this month. This activity supports children who are enrolled in public schools and who have been referred to the center through the ongoing agreement between GTC and the Palestinian Ministry of Education, Bethlehem Directorate. The activities of this group focus on core reading and mathematics skills.

All other therapeutic groups have completed their planned sessions. New therapeutic groups are being formulated and the GTC staff members are currently organizing the groups’ activities as per the needs and interests of the current GTC beneficiaries.
